What is the XV3 file format?
An .xv3 file is a proprietary binary 3D geometry file produced by Lattice Technology's XVL (eXtensible Virtual world description Language) format suite. The .xv3 variant is the highest-fidelity tier in the family, known as P-XVL (Precise XVL). It preserves curved-surface data using Gregory-patch free-form surfaces (equivalent to NURBS-class accuracy), full topology, face/edge/vertex data, and rounding weights from the original CAD source.
Lattice Technology, Inc. was founded in 1997 as an Iwate University spin-off in Japan to solve the problem of sharing large industrial CAD assemblies - often gigabytes in size - as lightweight files without sacrificing dimensional accuracy. Lattice claims compression ratios up to 1/100th of the original file size while maintaining 0.01 mm accuracy.
The XVL format family uses numbered extensions to represent different fidelity levels:
