THUMBDATA4 File

Android Gallery Thumbnail Cache (.thumbdata4)
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

A .thumbdata4 file (often with a long number suffix like .thumbdata4--1967290299) is not a photo - it is Android's hidden gallery thumbnail cache, a single large file storing tiny previews so galleries load faster. You do not need to open it. It is safe to delete to free space; Android rebuilds it automatically. If you want to extract the previews inside, a JPEG-carving tool like PhotoRec can do it, but the output is low-resolution thumbnails only, not your full-size originals.

Identify a file

What is the THUMBDATA4 file format?

.thumbdata4 is a proprietary binary cache file created by Android's stock Gallery app and the MediaStore content provider to store scaled-down previews of every photo or video the gallery has indexed. Multiple JPEG thumbnails are packed back-to-back inside the file, each beginning with the standard JPEG SOI marker (FF D8 FF), preceded by an internal index region that tracks their positions. The container carries no stable magic bytes at offset 0, so tools cannot identify it by a single file signature.

Files are hidden inside the DCIM/.thumbnails folder and always carry a long signed hash appended to the name - for example .thumbdata4--1967290299 - which varies by device and Android version. A companion .nomedia file in the same folder instructs MediaStore not to display the cache folder as a photo album.

The name encodes the cache generation: .thumbdata3 and .thumbdata5 are predecessors and successors of the same family; .thumbdata5 largely replaced .thumbdata4 on Android 7 and later, while modern Google Photos stores caches differently.

The cache can grow from tens of megabytes to several gigabytes on heavily used devices. It is safe to delete - Android rebuilds it automatically the next time the gallery opens. For quick cleanup, Files by Google is the recommended tool; forensic utilities such as PhotoRec can carve individual thumbnails from the binary blob.

Security & safety

RISK: LOW

The file itself is harmless passive cache data - it cannot execute. Two real cautions: (1) Deleting it is safe and does NOT delete your photos, but some users panic and delete the wrong thing - only the .thumbdata cache in .thumbnails is expendable. (2) Privacy: because it holds previews of every photo the gallery ever indexed, the cache can contain thumbnails of pictures you already deleted; if you hand a phone or its backup to someone, wipe this file. 'Thumbnail recovery' is also a known forensic technique - the cache can reveal deleted images.

Programs that open THUMBDATA4 files

Windows2 apps
PhotoRec Open-source Copy the file to a PC and let PhotoRec carve out the embedded JPEG thumbnails (low-res previews only).
Any hex editor Free Open in HxD only to confirm it is a thumbnail blob - search for repeated FF D8 FF JPEG headers. Not a real 'viewer'.
Android2 apps
Delete via Files by Google (recommended action) Free Enable 'show hidden files', go to DCIM/.thumbnails, delete .thumbdata*; the gallery rebuilds it. There is no reason to 'open' it.
Any JPEG-carving / thumbnail recovery app Open-source Only if recovering lost previews: run a JPEG carver (e.g. PhotoRec) over the file to extract the embedded thumbnail JPEGs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the .thumbdata4 file and can I delete it?
It is the Android gallery's hidden thumbnail cache (preview images for fast loading). Yes, it is safe to delete to free space - your real photos are untouched and Android rebuilds the cache automatically.
Why is .thumbdata4 so large (hundreds of MB or GB)?
It stores one small preview for every photo your gallery has ever indexed, so on phones with many images it grows large. Deleting it reclaims that space; it regenerates smaller and grows again over time.
How do I open a .thumbdata file to see the pictures?
You don't open it directly - it's a cache, not an image. To see the previews inside, run a JPEG-recovery tool like PhotoRec over it, which carves out the embedded thumbnail JPEGs (low resolution only).
Can I recover my deleted photos from .thumbdata4?
Only the small thumbnails, not full-resolution originals. A carver extracts the cached previews - helpful when the original is gone, but the quality is limited to the preview size.
What's the number after .thumbdata4 (e.g. -1967290299)?
An internal hash/version identifier the gallery app generated for the cache; it varies by device and Android version and has no meaning to the user.
Will deleting .thumbdata break my gallery?
No. The gallery just rebuilds the cache on the next scan. You may see thumbnails load a bit slower the first time afterward.
