What is the SSW file format?
.ssw files are DRM-encrypted Adobe Flash content packages created by the SealedMedia platform. The format wraps an encrypted .swf payload inside a proprietary SealedMedia container, identified by the ASCII signature SoftSEAL (hex 53 6F 66 74 53 45 41 4C 20) at the start of every file.
SealedMedia was used primarily by academic publishers - including Cengage - to distribute protected Flash-based courseware through portals such as CengageBrain. Oracle Corporation acquired SealedMedia around 2008. The only known client software was the Unsealer application, which validated a user's license against the SealedMedia server before decrypting and displaying the enclosed content.
Opening an .ssw file requires both the Unsealer client and a valid server-issued license; without them the encrypted payload is completely inaccessible. The format is now doubly locked: Adobe Flash Player reached permanent end of life on December 31, 2020, and all major browsers block Flash execution. The SealedMedia license server has almost certainly been taken offline. Unless a publisher re-releases the material in a modern format, content stored in .ssw files is effectively unrecoverable.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWSSW files are DRM-locked content, not executable in themselves. They cannot install software or run code without the specific Unsealer client. Risk is practical inaccessibility rather than security threat. Beware any site offering an 'SSW opener' - likely adware/scam filling a search gap.
