What is the SGN file format?
The .sgn file format is closely related to Sierra Print Artist computer software. These files are used for storing projects created with that program, such as signs, banners, calendars, greeting cards, stationery, and other assorted crafts. Sierra originally developed Print Artist in the 1990s; the software is now published by Nova Development and runs on Windows.
Within Print Artist's ecosystem, .sgn specifically identifies sign and banner projects, setting them apart from generic project files saved under related extensions such as .pa or .cal calendar layouts. The format is proprietary with no published file specification or magic-byte signature, so .sgn files cannot be reliably decoded outside Print Artist itself.
Be aware that .sgn is also claimed by unrelated file types - most notably cryptographic signature and signed-data files - so the extension alone does not confirm which format a file belongs to. When working with craft projects, Print Artist (Nova Development) remains the only known application that reads and writes this format.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWPrint Artist project files are passive documents and low-risk. The real caution is sourcing: searches for "open .sgn file" lead to many generic "universal file viewer" sites and bundled installers - avoid them and get Print Artist only from Nova Development. If your .sgn is actually a digital-signature file, do not try to "open" it as a document.
Format details
in a nutshell- Signature / signed-data file - Some apps use .sgn for a detached digital signature or a saved handwritten/email signature; opens only in the app that wrote it.
- Broderbund / craft-suite project - Other consumer card/craft programs occasionally output a .sgn project, similar in spirit to Print Artist.
