What is the RSV file format?
.rsv files are compiled runtime project files for RSView32, a SCADA/HMI (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition / Human-Machine Interface) application developed by Rockwell Automation's Rockwell Software division. RSView32 was introduced around 1997 and was widely deployed in industrial automation environments, typically running on Windows XP or Windows 7 embedded PCs on factory floors.
An .rsv file is the compiled, runtime-ready form of an RSView32 project. It bundles together all graphical display pages, the tag database (I/O point definitions), alarm configurations, trend logs, and machine communication settings - including OPC, DDE, and Allen-Bradley driver connections (DF1, DH+, EtherNet/IP). The companion editable source format is .rsvproj. Because .rsv is a proprietary Rockwell binary format with no public specification, files can only be opened with RSView32 itself.
RSView32 is discontinued legacy software. Rockwell Automation has recommended migration to FactoryTalk View Machine Edition (ME) or FactoryTalk View Site Edition (SE) for all new projects since the mid-2000s, with RSView32 v7.60 among the last known releases. Many installations remain in service on existing shop floors where full hardware replacement is costly. File sizes range from under 1 MB for simple panel designs to over 50 MB for complex multi-display SCADA projects.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWRSV files are proprietary industrial project files consumed only by RSView32. They cannot execute standalone code and are not a malware vector for general users. The risk in industrial contexts is configuration-related: a corrupted or wrong RSV file loaded onto a production HMI could cause operational issues.
