What is the NKC file format?
.nkc is a proprietary binary cache file generated automatically by Native Instruments KONTAKT, the professional software sampler. It is always paired with a same-name .nkx monolith (compressed sample and patch data) or .nkr resource monolith and never needs to be opened or edited directly.
The .nkc file stores an index of pointers - byte offsets and lengths - that locate each individual sample within the paired monolith. When KONTAKT loads a library, it reads the .nkc index instead of scanning the full monolith from scratch, dramatically reducing load times for large sample libraries containing thousands of audio files. It may also hold metadata such as instrument names, descriptions, and performance parameters.
The .nkc is created automatically the first time KONTAKT scans a library. It is safe to delete; KONTAKT regenerates it on the next library scan at the cost of additional scan time. Library installation is managed by Native Access (NI's library manager application). .nkc files are distinct from .nki (instrument patch), .nkm (multi), .nkb (bank), and .nkg (group) files, which define instrument programs rather than serving as cache data.
