What is the MBF file format?
An .mbf file is a backup archive created by Microsoft Money, the personal finance application Microsoft sold from 1991 until its discontinuation in June 2009. Each .mbf backup contains a complete snapshot of a Money database - accounts, transactions, budgets, investment portfolios, and payee records.
Internally, .mbf files are Microsoft Cabinet (CAB) archives, identified by the MSCF signature at the start of the file. The CAB archive wraps a single .mny MSISAM (Jet/ISAM) database file. Cabinet compression (LZX or MSZIP) keeps the backup compact; the format also includes per-file checksums as part of the Cabinet specification.
To restore a backup, the .mbf file must be opened via File > Restore Backup within Microsoft Money - renaming it to .mny will not work because the CAB wrapper must be removed by the application itself.
Microsoft released Money Plus Sunset Deluxe as a free download after discontinuing Money; it can open both .mny and .mbf files on Windows 10 and Windows 11, though it lacks online banking, automatic updates, and support. Quicken and GnuCash are the most widely used replacements today.
