What is the GCD file format?
Files with the .gcd extension store disc images created using the Prassi Global-CD (also known as PrimoCD) disc authoring software, popular in the late 1990s.
Unlike a simple file backup, a disc image contains the whole, exact physical structure of the source disc. The created image is effectively identical to the original CD, preserving sector data, track layout, and special disc structures such as boot sectors. This makes it possible to burn an exact functional duplicate or to mount the image virtually.
Disc images can be created using dedicated software tools such as Prassi. Different disc authoring tools produce similar images under different filename extensions - such as .iso, .nrg, or .bin. Prassi was acquired by Veritas in 2001 and is now defunct, making .gcd a legacy format rather than a widely supported one in current tools.
Existing .gcd files can be opened with IsoBuster, which recognises the Prassi structure and can extract individual files or convert the image to .iso for universal compatibility. PowerISO and UltraISO also support the format. Converting to .iso is the recommended approach for long-term storage, since ISO is the universally supported optical-disc image standard.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA GCD image is passive data, low risk in itself. Two cautions: (1) the imaged disc could contain old autorun executables or outdated software - scan anything you extract and run before trusting it; (2) avoid sketchy 'GCD converter' download sites that bundle adware - use the established tools (IsoBuster/PowerISO/UltraISO) from their official sites.
