What is the FCM file format?
.fcm files are the native cutting-design format for Brother ScanNCut electronic cutting machines and the companion CanvasWorkspace software (desktop and online). Each file stores vector path data - cut lines, draw lines, and shape geometry - that instructs the ScanNCut blade or pen exactly where to cut or draw on paper, vinyl, fabric, or other craft materials.
The format is proprietary to Brother Industries and is not publicly documented. Designs are created or imported in CanvasWorkspace, which accepts source files including .svg, .png, .jpg, and .bmp, converting them into the .fcm layout with mat placement and layer settings. The resulting .fcm file is transferred to the machine by USB flash drive, USB cable, or wireless network. The ScanNCut only accepts .fcm as its cutting input, making this conversion step mandatory.
Files are compact - typically 5 KB to 2 MB - because they store only vector paths with no embedded raster images. Community analysis of sample files reports a CFCM ASCII tag at the start of the binary header, though Brother publishes no official file signature documentation. Brother has released several machine generations (CM series, SDX/DX series); files created for newer firmware may not always load on older machines.
Third-party open-source tools can convert between .fcm and .svg, enabling designs to move between Brother ScanNCut and other cutting-machine ecosystems such as Silhouette or Cricut.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWAn .fcm is passive design data, not executable, so the file itself is low risk. The real-world caution is sourcing: buy/download designs from reputable craft sites and Brother's own libraries, and beware sites that advertise miracle "FCM converters" or "free FCM viewers" that bundle unwanted software (PUP/adware). Use Brother's free CanvasWorkspace instead.
