What is the ENS file format?
An .ens file is an EndNote Output Style file defining how citations and bibliographies are formatted when generating a reference list from an EndNote library. Each style encodes formatting rules for author names, titles, journal abbreviations, punctuation, and field order - configured separately for each reference type (journal article, book, chapter, thesis, website, and others).
ENS files are proprietary binary; despite containing structured citation template data, they cannot be usefully read in a text editor. Each style also specifies in-text citation format (for example, author-year versus numbered superscripts), dependent-text logic that suppresses punctuation when adjacent fields are empty, bibliography sort order, and page-range formatting.
Styles are installed in the EndNote Styles folder - on Windows, typically C:\Program Files\EndNote\Styles\; on macOS, ~/Library/Application Support/EndNote/Styles/. The format was introduced with EndNote 1.0 in 1989 by Niles & Associates. Ownership passed to Thomson Reuters and then to Clarivate Analytics in 2016.
