What is the CDC file format?
A .cdc file is a Chromeleon Driver Configuration Plugin file used internally by the Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS), a laboratory software platform developed by Dionex and, since the 2011 acquisition, maintained by Thermo Fisher Scientific.
The file describes how Chromeleon should configure and communicate with a specific chromatography instrument driver - for example, an HPLC pump, detector, or autosampler. It is not a document, image, or data file you open manually; it is internal plumbing loaded by Chromeleon itself when the instrument driver is registered or initialised.
Key characteristics:
- Proprietary binary format with no published magic-bytes signature or public specification
- Consumed exclusively by the Chromeleon CDS on Windows; no third-party tools can read it
- Typically small (kilobyte range), containing driver configuration metadata
- Version is tied to the specific Chromeleon build in use; there is no independent versioning
- Files are installed alongside instrument drivers, not created by end users
Because .cdc files have no documented internal structure, they cannot be meaningfully opened, edited, or converted outside of Chromeleon. If a .cdc plugin is missing or corrupt, reinstalling the relevant Chromeleon instrument driver from the Thermo Fisher support portal is the standard fix.
Note that .cdc is also used by unrelated applications - including AutoCAD DesignCenter (as a drawing preview cache) - so context, specifically a Chromeleon installation folder, is the safest way to confirm which type you have.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA Chromeleon .cdc is internal software configuration with no executable content of its own and is low-risk. Do not edit or delete one inside a working Chromeleon/lab system, however - it is part of instrument-driver configuration, and removing it could disrupt data acquisition; leave it to the Chromeleon administrator. If your .cdc is actually an AutoCAD DesignCenter cache, it is safe to delete (AutoCAD regenerates it).
