What is the AEE file format?
.aee is a proprietary encrypted file produced by ASUS Data Security Manager (DSM), a utility pre-installed on select ASUS notebooks from approximately 2007 to 2010. When a user protected a file or folder with DSM, the original content was wrapped in a proprietary encrypted container and saved with the .aee extension.
The format uses ASUS's own undocumented encryption algorithm. No standard file header or magic bytes have been publicly documented. The encrypted content cannot be recovered without both the original ASUS Data Security Manager software and the user credentials used at the time of encryption.
ASUS DSM was designed for Windows Vista and Windows 7. It was discontinued and is not compatible with Windows 8, 10, or 11. ASUS no longer distributes DSM through its support portal, making decryption of .aee files effectively impossible for most users today unless they retained the original software installation and login credentials.
The .aee extension should not be confused with AEE action-camera video files. The ASUS DSM variant is a generic encrypted wrapper with no embedded knowledge of the original file type - the source file's format cannot be inferred from the .aee extension alone.
Modern alternatives for file encryption on Windows include BitLocker (built into Windows 10/11 Pro) and open-source VeraCrypt.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWAEE files are encrypted data containers - not executable. They cannot run or spread malware. However, if you receive an unexpected .aee file, be cautious: the extension could theoretically be used to disguise other file types, though no known exploits exist.
