Wat is het B6Z-bestandsformaat?
Een .b6z-bestand is een gecomprimeerd archief gemaakt door B6Zip, een macOS-compressieprogramma. Net als andere archieven bundelt het een of meer bestanden en mappen in een enkele container, zodat ze minder ruimte innemen en gemakkelijker te delen zijn. Standaard comprimeert het formaat gegevens met LZMA2, maar het kan ook LZMA, Deflate, BZip2 of PPMD gebruiken. Archieven kunnen worden vergrendeld met AES-256-versleuteling en een wachtwoord.
Intern leent B6Z de lay-out van .zip. Elk opgeslagen bestand begint met een lokale header waarvan de signatuur de bytes 42 36 03 04 („B6”) is, en een index genaamd de „central directory” bevindt zich aan het einde van het bestand, beginnend met 42 36 01 02. De B6Zip-tool kon ook .zip, .tar en .rar archieven lezen. De app wordt niet langer onderhouden, waardoor losse .b6z-bestanden soms opduiken zonder de software die ze heeft gemaakt.
Beveiliging & veiligheid
RISICO: MEDIUMA .b6z file is a data archive, not a program, so it does not run on its own. The real risk is in what it contains: extracted executables or scripts can carry malware, so scan unpacked files before running them. Encrypted .b6z archives require the correct password to open. Because B6Zip is discontinued, prefer a well-maintained extractor like 7-Zip and verify the source of any archive you did not create.
