WII File

In files with the extension .WII, there is an encoded optical disc image for the WII console. These are often game images that can be decoded using specific software, commonly known as a Wii unscrambler. This results in an ISO image of the WII disc that can be burned. This format was created to facilitate the making of backup copies of physical game media for the Nintendo WII console. It was used by the homebrew community and is not an official format recognized or supported by Nintendo.

Creation of .WII Files

Files with the .WII extension are created by raw ripping of data from an optical disc to a Nintendo WII console onto a computer disk. These are specifically encoded data that require decryption if they are to be used. The format was utilized for the first versions of games, but was later replaced by other standards. A simple console program called Wii Unscrambler, with the option of an additional GUI overlay for easier handling, is used for its decryption.

Usage of WII Files

Officially, the format that allows for the creation of an ISO image of WII console games was intended for their archiving, to protect against physical damage to the disks. However, it has become a means of illegally sharing games. It also allows for the game to be loaded and gameplay to be conducted through a compatible version of a WII console emulator on a PC after decoding.
