What is the VCE file format?
A .vce file is a proprietary exam container created by Avanset for their Visual CertExam Suite and VCE Exam Simulator products. It stores practice-test questions, answer choices, correct-answer keys, optional explanations, exhibit images, and timer settings for simulated certification exams. .vce files are widely used by candidates preparing for IT vendor certifications from Cisco, Microsoft, CompTIA, and similar organizations.
The format is binary and proprietary; its internal structure is not publicly documented. Some files begin with the four-byte signature PV11. File sizes typically range from 66 KB to 4 MB depending on the number of questions and embedded images.
Opening a .vce file requires Avanset's VCE Exam Simulator (Windows and macOS) or the VCE Mobile app (iOS/Android). A free VCE Player is available for read-only access.
Note that .vce has also been used historically by Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit) for noise-reduction profile data, and by legacy Yamaha synthesizers for voice patch files - but neither of these uses is common today.
Security & safety
RISK: MEDIUMVCE files themselves are data containers (no executable code), so they do not directly carry malware. However, the VCE ecosystem on exam-dump sites frequently bundles adware or PUP installers alongside unofficial "free VCE players." Download only from avanset.com. Additionally, using real exam question dumps may violate certification body NDAs (Cisco, CompTIA, Microsoft all prohibit brain dumps).
