STUDIO File

Files with the STUDIO extension contain ready-to-cut projects for use with Silhouette cutting software and plotter. This proprietary file format is dedicated exclusively to the Silhouette Studio software series and is directly opened within it. It has replaced the older GST format, but both types of files are still supported. If Silhouette Studio software is installed on a computer, the files should be by default associated with it.

What information do STUDIO files contain?

Project files contain technical information - page settings, cuts, and possible trademarks. However, the basic project data contained in the file include:

• any shapes,
• images,
• formatted text,
• lines, patterns,
• colors and gradients,
• special effects.

If a STUDIO file is created in Silhouette Studio 3, it may not save more advanced elements supported by the new STUDIO3 format.

Using STUDIO files in the Silhouette app

The STUDIO file format is supported by all versions of Silhouette, but it is the default format for saving for Silhouette Studio 1 and 2. A new format, STUDIO3, was created for version 3. These formats are supported both by the basic, free version of the Silhouette Studio Basic Edition, and by the advanced, paid software. STUDIO files can be downloaded directly to the library from the Silhouette project site. They cannot be opened in other software, however, it is possible to export STUDIO files to another graphic format. In the free version, you can only print the project to a PDF file.
