What is the PNACH file format?
A .pnach file is a plain-text patch file used by PCSX2, the open-source PlayStation 2 emulator. It defines memory patches applied to a running PS2 game to modify behavior - enabling cheats, unlocking frame-rate caps, applying widescreen hacks, or fixing emulation compatibility issues.
The filename itself is the lookup key: it must equal the game's CRC32 hash in uppercase hexadecimal (for example, 6A8F18B9.pnach) so PCSX2 can automatically load the correct patches when a matching game is detected. Files are stored in the cheats/ subfolder of the PCSX2 configuration directory.
Each patch= directive specifies a memory address in EE (Emotion Engine) or IOP space, a data type (byte, short, word, double, or extended), and the value to write. Patches can be grouped under [GroupName] section headers (introduced in PCSX2 v1.7.4546, 2023), allowing individual cheats to be toggled in the PCSX2 interface without editing the file. Metadata lines such as gametitle= and author= document the patch at the top of the file.
Dynamic conditional patches added in 2024 extend the format further, allowing writes that only trigger when a memory address already holds a specific value. The modern group-based format is not backward-compatible with the legacy single-block style used before PCSX2 v1.7.
PCSX2 ships with a built-in library of .pnach patches for widescreen and other fixes. Users can write custom patches with any text editor and share them as plain files; official documentation is maintained at pcsx2.net.
Security & safety
RISK: LOW.pnach files are plain text - they contain no executable code and cannot run outside PCSX2. They modify PS2 game memory at runtime within the emulator only. The only risk is downloading .pnach files from untrustworthy sites that bundle them with malware installers; always download from PCSX2's official wiki/forums or established PS2 cheat repositories.

Technical details
deep spec| Filename convention | 8-character uppercase hex CRC32 of the PS2 game (e.g., `6A8F18B9.pnach`) - must match the running game CRC for auto-loading |
| File location | `cheats/` subfolder of the PCSX2 configuration directory |
| Encoding | Plain text, UTF-8 or ASCII |
| Patch directive syntax | `patch=enabled,place,address,type,value` |
| Memory spaces | EE (Emotion Engine CPU) or IOP (I/O Processor) - selected in the `place` field |
| Supported data types | `byte`, `short`, `word`, `double`, and extended types |
| Group support | `[GroupName]` section headers added in PCSX2 v1.7.4546 (2023) enable per-cheat toggle in the UI |
| Dynamic patches | Conditional writes based on current memory value - added 2024 (commit cc9c0f9) |
| enabled field values | `0` = disabled, `1` = always on, `2` = user-toggled on, `3` = dynamic/conditional |
| Metadata lines | `gametitle=`, `author=`, `description=` for documentation at top of file |
| Legacy format | Pre-v1.7.4546: single flat file, all patches always active; no group sections |
| Compression | None - plain text |
| Multiple files | Multiple `.pnach` files sharing the same game CRC are all loaded and merged by PCSX2 |
| Released | circa 2005 (PCSX2 cheat/patch system) |
| Latest version | Modern PCSX2 pnach v2 format (2024, with dynamic patches and group syntax) |
