What is the PLE file format?
A .ple file is a Messenger Plus! Live Encrypted Log - an AES-encrypted binary chat log created by the Messenger Plus! Live add-on for Windows Live Messenger. It stores a transcript of instant-message conversations, including message text, timestamps, and participant identities, in a password-protected container.
Messenger Plus! Live was a third-party plugin developed by Patchou (Yves Lescot) that extended Windows Live Messenger with additional features, including the option to save conversation logs in encrypted form. Users set a password in the plugin's preferences; that password is required to decrypt any .ple file the plugin created. Without the original password, the content is not recoverable.
.ple files are legacy artifacts. Windows Live Messenger was retired by Microsoft in January 2013 and fully discontinued in March 2014, after which no new .ple files could be created. A standalone viewer distributed by the Messenger Plus! team is archived on the Internet Archive. Third-party batch decryption scripts can convert .ple files to plain-text .log or .txt files when the correct password is supplied.
The format has no relation to standard log formats. Its only practical modern use is archival recovery of old MSN/Windows Live Messenger conversation histories.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWPLE files are encrypted binary logs of personal chat history - no executable content. Risk is purely privacy-related: if the file is decrypted without the owner's consent, it exposes private conversations. The encryption (AES) is strong; brute-force without the password is not feasible for typical users.
