What is the PKA file format?
.pka is a file format associated with the Packet Tracer application developed by Cisco Systems. .pka files store network settings, device configurations, and virtual network configurations - and unlike the plain .pkt simulation file, a .pka is specifically an *activity* file that also bundles an instructions panel, a locked initial network topology, a hidden answer network, and an automatic scoring rubric. .pka files are only recognized by Packet Tracer.
Packet Tracer was designed as an educational tool by the Cisco Networking Academy. It is available completely free after mandatory account registration. Packet Tracer simulates network traffic based on settings read from .pka files, making the tool helpful in learning and understanding how computer networks work and testing experimental network configurations in a safe virtual environment.
Activities are created using the built-in Activity Wizard inside Packet Tracer. The .pka format is proprietary and binary; files are version-locked to the Packet Tracer release that created them, so a newer .pka may not open in an older version of the application.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .pka is an inert simulation/assessment data file - it contains no executable code and runs only inside Packet Tracer's sandboxed simulator, so it cannot infect a system the way a program can. The realistic cautions are: download Packet Tracer ONLY from the official Cisco netacad site (cracked/'free full version' copies from third-party sites and torrents are a known malware vector), and be aware that a .pka saved in a newer Packet Tracer may not open in an older one. The activity files themselves are safe to share among students.
