What is the PIMX file format?
.pimx is an XML manifest file used by Adobe Extension Manager and Creative Cloud Packager to describe a Creative Cloud software component, plugin, or extension package. The file is plain text and contains only metadata - it does not bundle any binary files or media assets.
A typical .pimx manifest includes:
- Package ID and version number
- Dependencies on other Creative Cloud components
- Download URLs or local file paths pointing to the actual package payload
- Target installation directory and configuration parameters
The .pimx format was introduced around 2012 alongside Adobe Extension Manager CS6 and the early Creative Cloud. It is related to the .zxp extension package format (the actual installable archive) and .mxi manifest files used in older Extension Manager workflows.
Because .pimx is plain XML, it can safely be opened in any text editor for inspection. Users should not modify .pimx files manually - corruption can interfere with Adobe software installation and updates.
As of the post-2022 Creative Cloud, Adobe's CC desktop app handles package management internally and .pimx files are rarely encountered in current workflows. They remain relevant primarily in enterprise Creative Cloud deployments using older Creative Cloud Packager tooling and in legacy system configurations.
Note: despite occasional database misclassification, .pimx has no connection to Photoshop documents - it is exclusively an Adobe Extension Manager / Creative Cloud deployment manifest.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWPIMX is a plain XML text file with no executable content. It poses no direct risk. Malformed PIMX files could theoretically cause Adobe installer failures.
