What is the NM2 file format?
An .nm2 file is a Navitel map file in the legacy NM2 format, used by early versions of the Navitel Navigator GPS navigation application. Navitel is a Russian navigation software company; the NM2 format was the primary map format for Navitel Navigator from approximately 2006 through the version 6.x era.
Each .nm2 file covers a country or geographic region and stores binary vector map data including road networks, points of interest (POI), landmarks, GPS coordinates, administrative boundaries, and the navigation topology required for turn-by-turn routing. The format is proprietary and binary; Navitel has never released a public specification. File sizes range from 10 MB for small regions up to 2 GB for large countries.
NM2 was superseded by the .nm7 format with the release of Navitel Navigator 7.0. The two formats are mutually incompatible - running Navitel Navigator 7+ with NM2 map files can cause display errors or navigation failures, and Navitel recommends removing NM2 files before upgrading. The version number in each extension directly corresponds to the minimum required Navitel Navigator version.
GPSMapEdit is capable of opening some Navitel map formats for viewing and basic editing, but .nm2 files cannot be reliably converted to open navigation formats such as .gpx. Navitel continues to distribute current maps exclusively in the NM7 format through navitel.com.
