What is the MTF file format?
The .mtf extension identifies a proprietary game asset archive used by *Darkstone* (1999), an action RPG developed by Delphine Software. These binary containers bundle game resources - textures, audio tracks, character models, and scripts - into consolidated packages for efficient loading at runtime.
A standard Darkstone installation includes several .mtf archives such as DATA.MTF, MUSIC.MTF, and VOICES1.MTF. Each archive opens with a file-entry table that lists internal filenames together with their byte offsets into the archive body; individual entries may be compressed using a custom RLE-like scheme. The format carries no documented magic bytes, so identification relies on context - the archive's filename and its location inside a Darkstone install directory - rather than a fixed byte signature.
Delphine Software never published a formal specification. A community reverse-engineering project has since produced both a detailed format description and an open-source extraction tool. On Windows, Dragon UnPACKer also supports unpacking .mtf files.
The .mtf extension is unrelated to the Motorola Theme File, which shares only the name but stores mobile phone themes. Similar game archive concepts appear in .PAK and .WAD files from the same era.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA Darkstone .mtf is passive game data with no executable wrapper, so the archive itself is low risk; extracted assets are ordinary media files. Use reputable tools - the open-source Darkstone unpacker or Dragon UnPACKer from its official site - and avoid generic "MTF opener" download portals that bundle adware. If your file is actually a Microsoft Tape Format backup, treat it as you would any restored backup (scan restored files). Distributing extracted game assets may breach the game's copyright/EULA - extraction is generally for personal modding/preservation.
