What is the ISF file format?
.isf is the native document format of Inspiration, a diagramming and mind-mapping application published by Inspiration Software, Inc. The software was first released in 1988 for the Apple Macintosh and ran through version 9 (approximately 2013), making .isf one of the longer-lived educational diagram formats.
An .isf file stores the complete state of an Inspiration diagram: concept nodes (ideas), directional links between nodes, symbol and graphic elements, text outline content, and spatial layout information. The format supports both the graphical diagram view and the hierarchical outline view that Inspiration displays side by side.
The internal structure changed across major versions. Early releases (pre-version 8) used a legacy binary encoding; Inspiration 8 and 9 are believed to use an XML-based structure, though the schema was never publicly documented. Multiple format generations exist with no cross-version public specification, and tool support outside the original application is essentially nonexistent.
File sizes range from 10 KB for simple diagrams to 2 MB or more when embedded images are included.
Inspiration Software pivoted away from desktop software around 2013. The company now offers Inspiration 10 as a web-based tool that uses a different file format. Users with legacy .isf files need Inspiration 9 or an earlier copy of the desktop application to open them, as no widely available converter exists.

RISK: LOWISF files are diagram/document files with no executable capability. No known security risks. The main risk is data loss from inability to open if the proprietary Inspiration software is unavailable.
