What is the IPG file format?
An .ipg file is a game package for iPod Click Wheel devices, introduced by Apple in September 2006 alongside iTunes 7 and the 5th-generation iPod. The format powered a short-lived commercial game market for classic iPods, with 54 titles sold through the iTunes Store.
Internally, .ipg is a ZIP-based container - the file header carries the standard PK signature (50 4B 03 04) - holding a game executable binary, audio assets, and graphics. Apple applied FairPlay DRM over the ZIP structure; the installed content is verified by the iPod firmware and cannot be transferred to an unauthorized device.
Games were sold individually at approximately $4.99. Apple discontinued sales in September 2011 and removed all 54 titles from the iTunes Store the following month, making new legitimate purchases impossible. The format was never updated beyond its 2006-2011 lifespan.
The .ipg format is a direct predecessor to the .ipa iOS app package and shares its ZIP-based structure, but targets a directional click wheel interface rather than a touchscreen.
In 2024-2025, the iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project (initiated by Reddit user Olsro) successfully archived all 54 released titles from personal iTunes library backups. Today .ipg files cannot be purchased; legitimate copies exist only in personal iTunes archives or preservation collections.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWLegitimate IPG files from Apple's iTunes Store are DRM-signed and safe. Files obtained from third-party sources claiming to be IPG game packages should be treated with caution - verify against the preservation project archives. If you received an .ipg file in email that appears to be a JPEG image, it is likely a renamed .jpg and is safe to rename and open normally.
