What is the IF file format?
An .if file is a project file created by IFWin, a Spanish-language CAD application developed by Procedimientos-Uno, S.L. (Spain) for designing photovoltaic (solar panel) installations. The software supports both off-grid and grid-connected PV systems, allowing engineers to lay out solar modules, cabling, charge controllers, and other electrical components.
Within an IFWin project, users can import a DXF floor plan as a spatial reference or draw schematically from scratch. The application stores the full layout and electrical configuration of the installation in the .if file, including component placement, cable routing, and system parameters needed for sizing calculations.
The .if format is a proprietary binary structure with no published specification or magic-byte signature. Files are usable only with IFWin itself and cannot be opened by general-purpose CAD tools.
IFWin appears to be unmaintained as of 2026 - the last known builds are versions 1.1 and 1.2, and no active official website has been found. The software runs on Windows only.
Note that the .if extension is shared by many unrelated file types across different platforms (including GNU a2ps font index files and various interchange formats), so a .if file found outside an IFWin context does not necessarily indicate a photovoltaic project file.
