EMBL files store data in plain text, however, editing is disabled by default. Editing EMBL files is strongly discouraged due to complexity of of the format. Each, even the smaller change can affect the integrity of the file or introduce subtle errors. EMBL are typically manipulated using dedicated tools and procedures to preserve the data.
