What is the DSW file format?
A .dsw file is a Visual C++ 6 Workspace File - the top-level project index used by Microsoft Developer Studio (Visual C++ 6.0, released 1998). It lists each sub-project in a workspace, pointing to companion .dsp (Developer Studio Project) files, and records inter-project build dependencies and the active build configuration.
The format is plain text (Windows-1252/ASCII; no Unicode). Every .dsw file begins with two fixed header lines - Microsoft Developer Studio Workspace File, Format Version 6.00 followed by # WARNING: DO NOT EDIT OR DELETE THIS WORKSPACE FILE! - which serve as its reliable textual signature. Project entries follow using Project: "name"=relative\path\to\file.dsp - Package Owner=<n> syntax. A ### section at the end records dependencies and active configurations. All actual compiler settings, source file lists, and build targets reside in the individual .dsp files; the .dsw is purely an index.
The format version was stamped 6.00 and never incremented - Visual Studio .NET 2002 replaced it with the .sln solution file format. Visual Studio 2022 can no longer open .dsw or .dsp files; the extensions are no longer registered. The last Visual Studio versions with an official .dsw upgrade wizard were VS 2010 and VS 2013. Users who must migrate an old workspace today should open it in one of those IDE versions to generate a modern .sln, or recreate the project structure manually.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWA .dsw file is plain text and cannot execute. It only references paths to .dsp files. No security risk in opening it; risks arise only when actually building and running the referenced legacy C++ code (which may use deprecated APIs or unsafe patterns).
Format details
in a nutshell- Borland/Embarcadero C++ Builder workspace - Borland C++ Builder also used .dsw for its workspace format (distinct internal structure from VC++ 6, but same extension and similar purpose).
