What is the DPT file format?
.dpt files are droplet configuration files created by Better File Rename, a batch file-renaming utility for macOS developed by Binary Formations. A droplet is a small self-contained mini-application that stores a saved set of renaming rules; dragging files or folders onto the .dpt droplet icon in the Finder triggers the rename operation automatically using the pre-configured settings.
Better File Rename allows users to build complex renaming sequences - adding or removing text, inserting sequential numbers, changing capitalization, applying metadata substitutions such as EXIF date - and save that configuration as a .dpt file for repeated use without reopening the main application. This makes .dpt droplets particularly useful for photographers and archivists who regularly apply the same renaming logic to batches of files.
The format is proprietary and macOS-specific; no public specification exists. Files are binary and compact, typically under 100 KB, as they store only the rule definitions rather than any actual file data. A .dpt droplet is not portable to Windows or Linux and requires Better File Rename to be installed on the same macOS system.
Note that .dpt is also associated with Kingsoft Presentation and WPS Presentation for a completely different presentation-related file type; the two uses of the extension are entirely unrelated and should not be confused.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWDPT droplets from Better File Rename are macOS-specific and cannot execute on other platforms. WPS template .dpt files are data files with no macro risk in their template form (unlike .pptm). Treat any .dpt file from an unknown source with normal caution.
