What is the CXF file format?
A .cxf file is a collage descriptor created by Google Picasa, the photo-management application that Google discontinued on March 15, 2016. The format is plain XML, storing the layout instructions for a Picasa collage - the chosen style (Pile, Mosaic, Frame, Grid, and others), border and background settings, grid dimensions, and the relative file paths of each source image.
Crucially, a .cxf file contains no pixel data - it only references the original photo files. Moving or renaming a .cxf without its source images breaks the collage. File sizes are typically 2-50 KB regardless of how many high-resolution photos are referenced.
Because Picasa reached end-of-life in 2016, the .cxf format is effectively orphaned. No current mainstream photo editor supports it. The last release, Picasa 3.9, still runs in compatibility mode on Windows 10 and 11 and remains the only application that renders .cxf collages correctly. The file's XML content is human-readable and can be inspected in any text editor such as Notepad++ or VS Code, making it possible to trace the referenced image paths even without Picasa installed.
Google Photos, which replaced Picasa, has no equivalent offline collage feature and cannot import .cxf files.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWCXF is a plain XML text file with no executable code. The only risk is malformed XML triggering a parser bug in whatever tool reads it - negligible in practice. Picasa itself is EOL and receives no security patches; avoid downloading Picasa installers from untrusted mirrors (adware risk).
