What is the ARD file format?
.ard is the native file format of ArtiosCAD, the structural packaging design software developed by Esko (formerly Barco Graphics / Artios). It stores a single structural design - the die-line of a printed packaging item such as a folding carton, corrugated box, or retail display.
The heart of an .ard file is the blank: a 2D flat layout of cut lines, crease lines, and perforation lines that defines exactly how a sheet of board or corrugated material is cut and folded into the finished package. ArtiosCAD can fold the 2D blank into an interactive 3D model for visualisation, but the .ard itself holds only structural geometry - no print artwork or colour data. Graphics are applied later by combining the die-line with artwork in Esko Studio or DeskPack.
ArtiosCAD's standard and custom design libraries produce .ard files as default output. The format is proprietary and binary; it is not human-readable and has no publicly documented structure. Files saved in a newer ArtiosCAD release may not open in significantly older versions. For exchange with non-Esko tools the die-line can be exported to DXF or PDF.

Security & safety
RISK: LOWAn ARD is passive structural-geometry data with no scripting, so opening one in Esko software is low risk. As with any proprietary binary parsed by complex software, only open files from trusted sources and keep ArtiosCAD updated. Beware fake "ARD viewer/converter" download sites bundling adware - use Esko's own ArtiosCAD viewer. Confirm whether an .ard is an Esko structural design or an Alphacam router drawing before choosing a tool.
