Wat is het KWZ-bestandsformaat?
Een .kwz-bestand bevat een flipnote, de animatie in flipbook-stijl die je maakt in Flipnote Studio 3D. Nintendo bracht de app uit voor de Nintendo 3DS in Japan op 24 juli 2013, en later in Noord-Amerika en Europa. Elk bestand slaat een reeks handgetekende frames op, en elk frame heeft drie tekenlagen die gebruikmaken van een klein vast kleurenpalet. Omdat het 3DS-scherm stereoscopisch is, heeft elke laag ook een dieptewaarde, zodat een flipnote in 3D kan worden afgespeeld. Geluid wordt meegeleverd als maximaal vier sporen van een aangepaste ADPCM-audiocodec.
Intern is een .kwz een reeks getagde secties: een header, een 80x64 thumbnail, de gecomprimeerde frame-afbeeldingen, een metadatatabel per frame en de audio. De laatste 256 bytes zijn een RSA-2048-handtekening over het hele bestand, die de console controleert voordat een flipnote wordt geladen. De naam komt van *kawazu*, een oud Japans woord voor kikker. Het formaat is de opvolger van de .ppm-flipnote uit het DSi-tijdperk.
Beveiliging & veiligheid
RISICO: LOWA .kwz is a passive animation data file with no scripting or executable code, so opening one cannot run a program. Every genuine flipnote is RSA-signed, and an unmodified 3DS rejects files that fail the signature check. The main caveat is that files from unofficial sources may not validate on real hardware, but they pose no security risk to a computer.

There is no single fixed whole-file signature. A KWZ is a run of 8-byte-headed sections whose 4-character tags start with a capital K (KFH file header, KTN thumbnail, KMC frame data, KMI frame metadata, KSN sound). A normal flipnote opens with the KFH section, so the first three bytes are usually 'KFH', but folder-icon and comment variants of the format start with other sections.

Elke flipnote is ondertekend met een RSA-2048-handtekening over het hele bestand. Als een bestand buiten de app is bewerkt of gemaakt, komt de handtekening niet meer overeen en weigert een ongewijzigde 3DS het te laden.
Wat is het verschil tussen KWZ en PPM?
PPM is het oudere flipnote-formaat van Flipnote Studio op de DSi. KWZ is de 3DS-opvolger, die een derde tekenlaag, stereoscopische 3D-diepte en rijkere audio toevoegt. De tools die het ene formaat lezen, lezen meestal ook het andere.
Is een KWZ-bestand veilig om te openen?
Ja. Het zijn pure animatiegegevens zonder uitvoerbare code, dus het kan niets uitvoeren op je apparaat. Het openen in een viewer decodeert alleen de frames en audio.
