Wat is het IEPD-bestandsformaat?
Een .iepd-bestand is een Information Exchange Package Documentation-pakket. Het bundelt alles wat nodig is om een gestandaardiseerde gegevensuitwisseling te definiëren: XML-schema's, voorbeeldberichten, een catalogus en voor mensen leesbare documentatie. Fysiek is het een ZIP-archief, dus het bevat dezelfde PK-header als elk .zip-bestand en wordt op dezelfde manier uitgepakt.
Het formaat is afkomstig van NIEM, het National Information Exchange Model dat wordt gebruikt door overheidsinstanties in de Verenigde Staten voor het delen van gegevens over justitie, gezondheid en noodhulp. NATO heeft later hetzelfde pakket overgenomen en het mediatype application/vnd.nato.openxmlformats-package.iepd+zip geregistreerd. Binnen elke IEPD bevindt zich een verplicht catalogusbestand, iepd-catalog.xml (in oudere Model Package Description-versies mpd-catalog.xml genoemd), dat elk artefact indexeert en beschrijft, zodat een ontvangende partij de uitwisseling kan implementeren zonder externe referenties.
Naast de catalogus vindt u subset- en extensieschema's geschreven als .xsd-documenten, voorbeeld .xml-instantiebestanden, bedrijfsregels en een wijzigingslogboek. De catalogus is wat een gewoon archief verandert in een geldige IEPD.

RISICO: LOWAn .iepd is a ZIP archive of schemas, XML and documentation, so it carries no executable code and is safe to open. The usual ZIP caution applies: extract to a folder and be wary of unexpected packages from untrusted senders, since any ZIP can hide oversized or deceptively named entries.
