sPlan 7 Schematic Diagram File
Ask a question
QUICK ANSWER

An SPL7 file is a circuit schematic diagram created by sPlan 7, a Windows-only drawing tool by ABACOM GmbH. Only sPlan 7 can open it - a free trial is available from abacom-online.de. To share the schematic with someone who lacks sPlan, export it from sPlan as a PDF, BMP, or JPG.

What is the SPL7 file format?

.spl7 is the native schematic diagram format for sPlan 7, a lightweight commercial circuit drawing application developed by ABACOM GmbH in Germany. The format was introduced with sPlan 7.0 in 2009 and replaced the earlier .spl and .spl6 formats used by previous versions.

.spl7 files store electronic schematic diagrams - component symbols (resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, ICs, connectors), wire connections, net labels and sheet annotations. The format supports hierarchical schematics with sub-circuit modules. It is entirely proprietary and binary, with no published specification and no support outside of sPlan 7 itself.

sPlan is aimed at hobbyists and educators rather than professional EDA engineers. It does not generate netlists, simulate circuits or produce PCB layouts - it is strictly a drawing and documentation tool, popular in German-speaking countries. Diagrams can be exported as BMP, JPG or EMF images and printed to PDF, but there is no direct export to formats used by professional EDA tools.

sPlan 7.0 remains the current version as of 2025, available as a perpetual-license purchase from ABACOM.

Security & safety

RISK: LOW

SPL7 files are schematic diagram documents and are not executable. They pose no direct security risk. Only sPlan 7 can open them; no scripting or macro execution is possible. Obtain sPlan only from the official ABACOM website or authorized resellers (Saelig in the US) to avoid counterfeit or bundled adware versions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an SPL7 file?
Only sPlan 7 (by ABACOM, Windows only) can open .spl7 files. Download the free trial from abacom-online.de to view a file without purchasing. No free third-party viewer exists.
Can I open an SPL7 file in KiCad or Eagle?
No - .spl7 is a proprietary format with no importer in KiCad, Eagle, Altium or any other EDA tool. You would have to redraw the schematic.
How do I share an .spl7 schematic with someone who doesn't have sPlan?
Export from sPlan 7 as PDF (File > Export or print to a PDF printer) or as a BMP/JPG image.
Can sPlan 7 open older .spl files?
Yes - sPlan 7 can open schematics from older sPlan versions (.spl, .spl6). However, once resaved in sPlan 7, the file becomes .spl7 and older versions cannot open it.
What is sPlan and is it still available?
sPlan is a lightweight Windows schematic drawing tool by ABACOM GmbH (Germany), popular among hobbyists and educators. It is still commercially available (sPlan 7.0, ~€39/~$48 USD) as of 2024 from abacom-online.de.
