What is the SFP file format?
An .sfp file is an HP LaserJet Soft Font Portrait file - a binary font file containing downloadable bitmap glyphs in portrait page orientation, formatted as a PCL (Printer Command Language) data stream. "Soft font" refers to a font downloaded into a printer's RAM for the duration of a print job, as opposed to fonts permanently stored in ROM or supplied via cartridge.
The file is structured as a sequence of PCL escape commands: a font header record that describes typeface metrics (point size, pitch, symbol set, and resolution), followed by individual character records each containing the bitmap data for one glyph. Portrait orientation is intrinsic to the file; the companion landscape-orientation variant uses the .sfl extension. Both were necessary because PCL 5 bitmap fonts cannot be algorithmically rotated - printers required a separately downloaded copy for landscape output.
.sfp files originate from the HP PCL 5 specification, introduced with the LaserJet II and III printer families in the late 1980s. Bitmap soft fonts are resolution-specific: a 300 DPI font cannot substitute for 600 DPI output without visible quality loss. PCL 5 also defines scalable font formats (Intellifont format 15, TrueType format 16), but .sfp files are exclusively bitmap.
In modern printing environments .sfp files are largely obsolete. Current printer drivers deliver TrueType and OpenType fonts through the operating system's font pipeline. Legacy use cases persist in industrial label printing and barcode applications with older PCL-only hardware.
