Why convert MTL to MA?
An MTL file is a plain-text list of material properties (colors, shininess, texture paths) designed solely as a companion to an OBJ file. A .ma file is a complete Maya ASCII scene containing geometry, cameras, lights, and material networks. An MTL file has no geometry for Maya to attach materials to, so creating a .ma from an MTL alone would produce an empty, useless scene.
How to convert MTL to MA
Autodesk Maya APP
Place the .obj, .mtl, and all texture images in one folder, import the .obj via File > Import (Maya reads the .mtl automatically), then save via File > Save Scene as .ma.

- You need the companion
.objfile and its texture images - the.mtlalone has no geometry for Maya to import. - MTL uses a classic Phong shading model (
Kd,Ks,Ns), which may not map directly onto Maya's shader system; materials may need adjustment after import. - A
.mascene file is a full Maya scene; without the companion.obj, there is no geometry to populate it with.
Frequently asked questions
I have only an MTL file - can I open it in Maya?

mtllib line and they must be in the same folder. Can I convert just the MTL materials into Maya shaders?
.obj, which pulls in the .mtl, and Maya creates corresponding shading nodes that you can then edit.
