Why convert MTL to OBJ?
An OBJ file is a list of vertex positions, face indices, texture coordinates, and normals - none of that data lives in an MTL, which contains only material blocks: diffuse color, specular, shininess, transparency, and texture map paths. There is nothing to convert because no geometry exists in the source file. The .mtl is a companion designed to be used alongside the .obj, not as a replacement.
How to convert MTL to OBJ
Blender OPEN-SOURCE
Open the .obj file in Blender via File > Import > Wavefront (.obj); the companion .mtl loads automatically as long as it is in the same folder - no conversion from .mtl to .obj is needed.
MeshLab FREE
Open the .obj file in MeshLab; the .mtl is read automatically when it is in the same folder as the .obj.

- MTL and OBJ are companion files; the OBJ references the MTL via an
mtllibline - they must stay in the same folder along with any texture images. - If you have only the
.mtland the.objis missing, the geometry cannot be recovered; locate the original export source to retrieve the.obj. - Renaming
.mtlto.objproduces a file every 3D application will reject - the syntax and content are completely different.
