Why convert MTL to FBX?
FBX is the standard interchange format for game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine and for professional 3D pipelines. OBJ+MTL supports simple mesh exchange but lacks rigs, animations, and the modern material models those tools expect. Converting to FBX gives the model a single portable file those pipelines can import directly.
How to convert MTL to FBX
Blender OPEN-SOURCE
Import the .obj via File > Import > Wavefront (.obj) - Blender reads the .mtl automatically - then export via File > Export > FBX (.fbx); set Path Mode to Copy to embed textures in the export.
About these formats
An MTL file is the material description companion to a Wavefront OBJ 3D model. It stores surface colors, shininess, transparency, and texture file references. You do not open it directly -…

- MTL uses Phong shading (
Kd,Ks,Ns) while FBX supports PBR materials; Blender maps the values to its Principled BSDF during import, so specular and shininess behavior may differ in the output. - Texture images must be in the same folder as the
.objand.mtl; if they are missing, the exported FBX will have no textures. - OBJ+MTL is a static format with no animation or rig data; the exported FBX will contain geometry and materials only.
Frequently asked questions
Do I convert just the MTL file?
.mtl has no geometry; you import the companion .obj (which pulls in the .mtl) and export the full model as FBX.Will the materials look the same in FBX?
What if my textures are missing from the folder?
.obj and .mtl before importing.
