What is the LYR file format?
.LYR is an ArcGIS Layer File created by Esri's ArcMap and ArcGIS Desktop software. It stores symbology and display settings for a geographic layer - including renderer rules, color schemes, label styles, scale dependencies, and definition queries - along with a reference (path) to the actual geographic data source such as a shapefile, file geodatabase, or feature class.
A .lyr file does not contain any geographic data. It stores only how to display data and where to find it. If the referenced data source is moved, renamed, or deleted, the layer appears broken in ArcGIS and requires the source path to be repaired manually.
Internally, .lyr files use the OLE2 Compound Document (CFBF) binary format - the same container used by legacy Microsoft Office files such as .doc and .xls. The Esri-specific binary streams inside define the symbology and connection settings.
The .lyr format is specific to ArcGIS Desktop (Windows only) and has been superseded by .lyrx - a JSON-based layer format introduced with ArcGIS Pro around 2015 - which is the current standard for new projects. ArcGIS Pro can import .lyr files for backward compatibility.
Security & safety
RISK: LOWLYR files are binary Esri symbology containers; they cannot execute code and pose no security risk to open in ArcGIS. However, a .lyr received from an unknown source could point to a data source on a remote server or UNC path, potentially logging the user's network credentials - standard enterprise precaution applies.
