What is Vi?
Vi is a screen-oriented text editor originally created by Bill Joy for Unix systems in 1976 that operates in distinct command and insert modes. It is included by default on virtually all Unix and Linux systems, and its direct successor Vim (Vi Improved) extends it with additional features while preserving backward compatibility.
