How to convert WRL to OBJ
- Add your .WRL file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .OBJ in a few seconds.
- Download your new .OBJ file.
What to expect
- Geometry (vertices, faces, normals) transfers intact; materials map to a
.mtlfile but texture image paths may need manual correction if they were relative in the original VRML. - Per-vertex color is not reliably preserved in OBJ/MTL; if your model stores color per-vertex (common in color 3D-print files), export to PLY from MeshLab instead.
- VRML scene content - lights, viewpoints, sensors, and Script nodes - has no OBJ equivalent and is silently dropped during conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Do I get a `.mtl` file alongside the `.obj`?
Yes - MeshLab, Blender, and most other tools write both files automatically. Keep them in the same folder and place any referenced texture images there too.
My VRML file starts with `#VRML V1.0 ascii` - will it convert?
VRML 1.0 imports with reduced fidelity in most tools. VRML97 files (starting with
#VRML V2.0 utf8) are the widely supported version and convert much more reliably. The converted model has missing or inverted faces - how do I fix it?
In MeshLab run Filters > Normals > Re-Orient all faces coherently; in Blender select all geometry in Edit mode and use Mesh > Normals > Recalculate Outside.
Can I convert multiple WRL files at once?
meshconv handles batch conversions on the command line - pass multiple .wrl files or use a shell glob.Programs that convert WRL: PolyTrans|CAD+DCC · Blender · Bryce · IVCon · meshconv · Blender for Mac · Bryce for Mac · Blender for Linux
