Why convert WRL to FBX?
WRL is a plain-text VRML scene format common in CAD exports and legacy 3D archives, but game engines and animation tools such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Maya, and 3ds Max do not import it natively. Converting to .FBX gives those tools a format they read directly, making it the standard handoff step when bringing a CAD-sourced or scanned model into a real-time pipeline.
How to convert WRL to FBX
Blender OPEN-SOURCE
Enable the built-in Web3D add-on, import your .wrl via File > Import > X3D/VRML2, then export via File > Export > FBX.
FreeCAD OPEN-SOURCE
Open the .wrl in FreeCAD and use File > Export, selecting FBX as the output format.

About these formats
A WRL file is a plain-text 3D scene in VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language), an open ISO standard from 1995. To open one, upload it to a free online viewer such as ImageToStl or Aspose,…

- VRML interactivity - sensors, Script nodes, and TimeSensor/Interpolator motion - has no FBX equivalent and is dropped; only static mesh geometry is exported.
- Texture images referenced in the
.wrlvia ImageTexture nodes must be in the same folder at import time, or they will be absent from the output FBX. - Blender's FBX exporter is reverse-engineered; axis orientation (Forward/Up settings) may need adjusting if the model appears rotated after import into Unity or Maya.
