How to convert IGS to STEP
- Add your .IGS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .STEP in a few seconds.
- Download your new .STEP file.
What to expect
- IGES stores individual surfaces, not solids - the converted
.stepmay still contain unstitched surfaces; run a sew/stitch command in your CAD tool if a closed solid body is required. stepand.stpare identical formats - the extension can be renamed freely without affecting the data.- Color and layer data may not survive unless the exporter uses STEP AP214; AP203 (the default in some tools) carries geometry only.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting IGS to STEP fix gaps in my model?
No - conversion changes the file format but does not repair geometry. If the source IGES had surface gaps, the STEP output will too; use the sew/stitch tool in FreeCAD or CAD Assistant before exporting.
What is the difference between STEP AP203 and AP214?
AP203 covers 3D solid geometry; AP214 adds color, layer, and design-context data. Choose AP214 if the recipient needs color information to be preserved.
Is STEP better than IGES?
Yes - STEP is the current ISO standard and handles solids and assembly structure more robustly. IGES has had no revisions since 1996 and is kept around mainly for legacy data.
Will units carry over correctly?
Yes - both formats store unit information in the file header, and tools such as FreeCAD and CAD Assistant read IGES units and write them correctly into the STEP output.
