Why convert PRT to STEP?
A Creo .prt is a proprietary binary format readable only by Creo and tools with licensed translators. .step (ISO 10303) is the neutral exchange standard for solid B-rep geometry across mechanical CAD, transferring exact surfaces and solids without loss of dimensional accuracy. Converting to STEP is the standard route for sharing Creo parts with suppliers, manufacturers, or colleagues who use a different CAD system.
How to convert PRT to STEP
PTC Creo Parametric APP
Open the .prt in Creo, go to File > Save As > Save a Copy, select STEP (*.stp or *.step) from the Type dropdown, choose AP214 as the protocol, and click OK.
CAD Assistant FREE
Open the .prt in CAD Assistant (opencascade.com), verify the geometry, then go to File > Export and select STEP as the output format.
Autodesk Fusion 360 FREE
Import the .prt in Fusion 360 via File > Open, then go to File > Export and select STEP (.stp) as the format.

About these formats
A PRT file is a single 3D part created by PTC Creo Parametric (formerly Pro/ENGINEER). To open it without buying Creo, use the free PTC Creo View or eDrawings viewer. To move the part to…

- The parametric feature history - sketches, extrudes, fillets, and dimensions - does not transfer to STEP; the output carries the resulting solid geometry only.
- Creo saves numbered revisions (e.g.
bracket.prt.3); open the highest-numbered file before converting to ensure you export the latest version. - AP214 is the recommended STEP protocol for most cases as it carries color and layer data; AP203 has broader support with older CAD systems.
