Why convert IGS to JPG?
The main reasons are sharing a visual reference with someone who has no CAD software, embedding a model view in a report or email, and generating a quick thumbnail. An .igs file stores NURBS surfaces and wireframe curves; a JPG export is a rendering of those surfaces from one angle, not a format conversion - no CAD data survives in the image.
How to convert IGS to JPG
3ds Max (3D Studio Max) EASIEST
Import the .igs into 3ds Max, set up the view or camera, and render or save the viewport image as JPG.
CAD Assistant FREE
Open the .igs with File > Open, rotate and zoom to the desired angle, then go to File > Export > Image and save as JPG. CAD Assistant supports custom background colors and output resolution.
FreeCAD OPEN-SOURCE
Open the .igs in FreeCAD, navigate to the desired view, and use View > Save Picture to export as JPG with custom width and height in pixels.

About these formats
An IGS file is a 3D (or 2D) CAD model stored in IGES format, a vendor-neutral ASCII standard used to move part geometry between different CAD programs. To view it free, open it in FreeCAD,…

- This is a render, not a format conversion - all geometry, surface definitions, dimensions, and measurement capability are discarded; do not delete the original
.igsfile. - JPG uses lossy compression; fine edges and surface boundaries on CAD geometry often produce visible artifacts. Export to PNG for documentation requiring clean geometry outlines.
- The export captures only one view angle; create multiple exports if you need front, side, and top views.
