Why convert IDML to PDF?
IDML stores editable layout data as a ZIP of XML files - the recipient needs InDesign or a compatible app to open it. A .pdf is the standard delivery format when someone needs to view, proof, or print the design without layout software. PDF preserves fonts, images, and layout exactly as they appear on screen.

- Linked images must be present when you open the
.idml- missing assets result in placeholder boxes or low-resolution previews in the PDF. - Missing fonts cause text reflow or substitution; InDesign and Affinity Publisher flag missing fonts on import - install them before exporting.
- For print production, use PDF/X-4 (or PDF/X-1a for older RIPs) to ensure all fonts are embedded and colors are converted correctly.
