Why convert IDML to JPG?
IDML is a ZIP package of XML files describing an InDesign layout - frames, text, styles, and linked images. Converting to .jpg rasterizes the layout at a chosen resolution, producing flat page previews useful for web thumbnails, client proofs, or sharing with people who have no layout software. For print production, export PDF from InDesign instead.
How to convert IDML to JPG
Adobe InDesign APP
Open the .idml via File > Open, then go to File > Export and choose JPEG; set quality to Maximum and resolution to 72 PPI for screen or 300 PPI for sharp output - InDesign creates one .jpg per page.
Affinity Publisher FREE
Open the .idml via File > Open (review the import report for fidelity warnings), then go to File > Export and choose JPEG; set quality and DPI, and select which pages to export.

- Converting to JPEG rasterizes the layout at a fixed resolution - all text becomes pixels, no layer structure survives, and the file cannot be edited.
- Linked images must be present when you open the
.idml- missing images result in grey placeholder boxes in the exported JPEG. - InDesign and Affinity Publisher export one JPEG per page - a multi-page document produces multiple numbered files.
