Why convert MD to PDF?
Markdown renders well in developer tools and code repositories, but most people outside a developer context cannot view it formatted. A PDF opens everywhere, prints reliably, and presents the same layout on every device - the standard format for sharing formatted documents externally.
How to convert MD to PDF
Typora APP
Open the .md file in Typora and choose File > Export > PDF. Typora renders using its built-in CSS theme with no LaTeX dependency required.
VS Code FREE
Install the Markdown PDF extension by yzane, open the .md file, press Ctrl+Shift+P, type 'Markdown PDF: Export (pdf)', and press Enter. The PDF is saved next to the source file automatically.
Pandoc OPEN-SOURCE
Install Pandoc and a LaTeX engine, then run pandoc file.md -o file.pdf in a terminal. Supports advanced layout via YAML front-matter in the .md file.
Obsidian APP
Open or import the .md file into an Obsidian vault, then choose File > Export to PDF, adjust page size and margins, and click Export.

- Pandoc requires a separate LaTeX engine (MiKTeX, TeX Live, or TinyTeX) to generate PDFs - install both before running the command.
- Typora and VS Code with Markdown PDF use Chromium-based rendering, so no LaTeX installation is needed.
- Obsidian's PDF export renders its own Markdown extensions (callouts, etc.) but plugin-generated content may not appear in the output.
