What to expect

  • JPG uses lossy compression - pixel data is permanently discarded on save; convert to .png instead if you need a lossless copy.
  • PPM stores no EXIF or color profile metadata, so the resulting .jpg will carry none either.
  • 16-bit PPM files are downscaled to 8-bit on JPEG export; use TIFF or PNG to preserve the full bit depth.

Frequently asked questions

Will my image look different after converting to JPG?
At quality 80 or higher, photos look identical. Images with sharp text, solid colors, or pixel art may show JPEG artifacts - use PNG for those cases.
Can I batch-convert many PPM files at once?
Yes. IrfanView's Batch Conversion, XnConvert, and ImageMagick's mogrify -format jpg *.ppm all process whole folders in one step.
Does it matter whether my PPM file is P3 (ASCII) or P6 (binary)?
No - IrfanView, GIMP, and ImageMagick read both variants automatically; the distinction is invisible during conversion.
Why is my PPM file so large?
PPM stores raw uncompressed pixels, so a 3000×2000 image takes roughly 17 MB; converting to JPG typically brings it down to 1-3 MB.
