What to expect

  • Both AMR and AAC are lossy, so this is a lossy-to-lossy transcode: quality can only stay the same or drop, never improve.
  • The narrow speech bandwidth of AMR carries over - AAC cannot add frequencies the AMR source never captured.
  • Basic metadata may not map cleanly between the two formats; expect the audio itself to survive but tags to be minimal.

Frequently asked questions

Will the audio quality improve when I convert AMR to AAC?
No. AMR is a lossy speech codec, so its recording already has permanent detail loss baked in. Re-encoding to AAC (also lossy) cannot restore anything; at best it preserves what is there, and a new lossy pass can only match or slightly degrade it.
Why convert AMR to AAC?
AMR is the voice codec from GSM/3G phones and many players lack a decoder for it. AAC is far more widely supported, so converting gives you a file that plays in mainstream apps without a special codec.
Where will the AAC file play?
AAC plays in VLC, Windows Media Player on Windows 10/11, and the Music app on Apple devices, along with most phones and browsers. Compatibility is the main reason to switch from AMR.
What is lost in the conversion?
AMR is optimized for narrowband speech, so the source is already limited in frequency range and detail. Converting to AAC keeps that ceiling and adds one more lossy encoding step; it will not sound like a full-bandwidth music recording.
