Why convert AMR to 3GP?
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a compressed speech codec adopted by 3GPP in 1999, the same group that defined the .3GP container in 2001. A bare .amr file and AMR audio inside a 3GP wrapper hold identical audio data. The 3GP container adds compatibility with apps and devices that require a container format rather than a raw codec stream.

- AMR-NB (the common variant) records at 8 kHz and 4.75-12.2 kbps - designed for phone calls, not music, so the audio quality ceiling is low regardless of the output container.
- The 3GP container can also carry a video track; adding video later is possible once the AMR audio is inside a 3GP file.
